We are delighted to introduce you to our very special Yellow Rattle wildflower seed balls!

Contents: 10 small-batch seed balls, presented in a cotton drawstring bag, with full planting instructions (printed on recycled card).

Plant in autumn or winter to break natural dormancy in the seed. If this is not possible and a spring sowing is required, chill in the fridge for six weeks prior to sowing, to help your wildflower garden!

Ingredients: UK native Yellow Rattle wildflower seeds, peat-free compost, clay & chilli powder.

Made carefully by hand in Worthing.

Cotton bag can be re-used or recycled.

Yellow Rattle seed is a vital addition to any wildflower meadow. By attaching itself to the roots of grass species and slowing its growth, it creates space for a wide range of wildflower seeds to flourish. Commonly found in grassy meadows and pastures throughout the UK. Perfect to sow in addition to a diverse wildflower seed mixture, such as our Wild at Heart seed mix. Also known as ‘hay rattle’, this can be sown into existing meadows or alongside other wildflower mixes to create a natural, nectar-rich haven for wildlife and pollinators.

Height: 20 – 50cm
Flowers: June – September
Soil Requirement: Moist or well-drained
Light Requirement: Full sun
Seeds per gram: 270

Why Are We Doing This?

At Sussex Seed Balls, we believe wildflowers really, really matter. The more wildflowers we grow, the happier our pollinators – the birds, bees and other insects – will be. They depend on wildflowers for food throughout the year. The WWF tells us that ‘on a single day in summer, one acre of wildflower meadow can contain 3 million flowers, producing 1 kg of nectar sugar. That’s enough to support nearly 96,000 honey bees per day.’

Here in Adur & Worthing, we’re proud to see that our council are supporting the wildflower movement. You can check out their wildflower map to see some of the green spaces which are benefitting from this activity.

At Sussex Seed Balls, we want to celebrate our bees not just for World Bee Day but every day of the year! We would love to see wildflowers spring up on your patios, in your lawns, your borders and allotments, on our verges and central reservations, in parks and green spaces. By planting our UK native varieties seed balls you are helping to rewild our local area.

Remember

Children should be supervised whilst using seed balls.

Wash hands after using seed balls, as they contain chilli powder (to deter bees & insects, whilst growing!).

Seed balls could be a choking hazard & should be kept away from babies, toddlers & small children.
